Green city of Daugavpils is situated in northeastern Latvia and is the second largest city of the country. This beautiful city is located on the banks of Daugava river, city’s name means ”Castle of Daugava”. It has appr. 96,000 residents.

Daugavpils is famous for its 19th century red brick architecture, which is sometimes called Latgale baroque. Its historical centre is well-known for its brick facades and peculiar street network.

What to do and see in Daugavpils

Recreation

 

  • Daugavpils Olympic Centre (1 Stadiona Street) has an open-air swimming pool, which is one of the biggest in Europe. Here is also a spa zone including sauna, steam baths and massage baths.
  • Ledus Halle ice hall (Stacijas iela 45a) is good for skating.
  • Dubrovin Park in city centre is good for piqueniques.
  • Stropi beach on the shore of Lielais Stropu lake is quite popular in summertime.

Mark Rothko Art Center

This multi-functional art complex located at the Arsenal building of the Daugavpils Fortress is dedicated to memory and abstract expressionist works of American-Latvian artist Mark Rothko. It also houses several exhibitions of other Latvian-born and foreign modern artists. There is also residences for artists.

Local Arts and History Museum

This museum (locating at Rigas iela 8 in idyllic 19th-century house) is dedicated to history and cultural heritage of the Daugavpils region and Latgale province. Exhibition contains e.g. works of Daugavpils painter Leonid Baulin (1945-2002). Collection also shows multiple archaeological artefacts exposed from the local digs, such as instruments, household objects, paintings and photography.

 

Daugavpils fortress

 

The Daugavpils Fortress is the only fortress dating from the early 19th century in Eastern Europe that has remained almost unchanged. The total area of this brilliant complex is over 150 hectares. The meandering form of the fortress consists of a rampart with 8 bastions, 6 ravelins and several protective structures. The planning of the details was done with the help of the best architectural schools of Tsarist Russia and Europe. Almost the all complex represents Empire style except the Nickolas Gate and the water tower. They are built in the Gothic style. The area is always open for visitors, and the entrance is free of charge except certain culture institutions and events.

 

Church Hill

 

On the Church Hill is located the churches of four different confessions. Martin Luther Cathedral designed by V. Neimanis was built in 1893. Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from the year 1905. Four years later the organ designed by A. Homan from Poland was added. The Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1905, and it was originally a garrison church. The Church of the Community of Old Believers was built during the years 1908 – 1928.

 

The Unity House

 

The most essential building of the historical center of Daugavpils is the Unity House dating from the period of the First Republic. The house was built after the suggestion of the president Karlis Ulmanis with the help of donations and funds provided by the state. It was designed by Verner Vitands, and it was the most modern multifunctional building in Europe of that time.

 

Andrejs Pumpurs Public Garden

 

The Andrejs Pumpurs Public Garden, created in the late 19th  century, is located opposite the Unity House. There is a bust of the poet Andrejs Pumpurs in the garden, designed by I. Krumina in 1966. The most popular meeting point for the local residents is the fountain A girl with a Lily in the middle of the garden. In addition, there are St. Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Chapel and a monument to innocent victims of the Red Terror designed by Y. Volkova. The modern chapel was consecrated in 2004. In the Soviet time, the original cathedral was closed in 1961 and demolished in 1969.

 

Daugavpils University Public Garden

 

The University Garden is a small square in front of the education building of the Daugavpils University. There are a small fountain, a bust of the poet Janis Rainis from the year 1966 designed by I. Folkmanis and a sundial. The sundial was designed by A. Yaskov in 1910.

 

The Centre of Russian Culture (Russian House)

 

In the Russian House is displayed unique exhibitions, such as Old Believers in Latvia, The Orthodox in Latvia, Gzhel Ceramics and Khokholma Ware. Also paintings and sculptures of Pyotr Khudobcenok are shown.

 

Shopping

 

  • Ditton Nams is the largest shopping and entertainment center of the city. It has the total area of 46 500 m2, and there are more than 800 tenants. The center has more than 4 million visitors annually. From there, you will find, for example, two supermarkets, a bowling hall, a Mexican restaurant, a pizzeria, cafés, a game hall and a cinema.
  • Zalais tirgus is an eco-production market of local farmers.
  • Dāvanu pasaule is a souvenir and gift shop.
  • From the Latgale Exhibition Hall you can buy high quality Latvian handicraft at reasonable price. There are sold, for example, amber jewelry, ceramics, different souvenirs of wood and leather, stained glasses, socks, linen napkins and tablecloths and woolen blankets.
  • Riro is a small antique shop.
  • There are three bookshops in the city: Polaris, Janus and Jānis Roze.
  • Sportswear can be found from Planēta, Treks, Sportland and Salmo.  The last-mentioned store sells fishing equipments.
