But Malaga is not just about good weather, it offers attractions and activities for all tastes. It has historic buildings, monuments, palm-lined boulevards, shopping areas and galleries filled with contemporary and classical art.
Málaga
Alcazaba ja Gibralfaro
Attesting the long Moorish reign in Southern Spain, the fortress of Alcazaba and the castle of Gibralfaro stand tall on the hilltop that overlooks Malaga port. From the castle you can also enjoy magnificent views over Malaga city and the port.
Teatro Romano
El Teatro Romano is the oldest monument in Málaga City; it lies in the cultural heart of Málaga city, at the foot of the famous Alcazaba fortress. The site is accompanied by a visitor center, that tells about the history of the ruins.
Malaga Cathedral
After the Moors were banished, many churches and cathedrals were built in Spain. Malaga Cathedral now stands where the city’s main mosque was found in the Muslim era. Building work on the cathedral was started 1528 and lasted for more than 200 years.
Museo Picasso
Inaugurated in 2003, the Museo Picasso is one of the top touristic attractions in Malaga city. The permanent exhibition gallery includes classic works, sketches and ceramics by Picasso. The gallery also features excellent temporary exhibitions. Close to the museum there is also the Casa Natal (Birthplace of Picasso), which is also open to the public.
Beaches
Malaga City has kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches. They are all situated along the Promenade of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, which is lined with bars and restaurants. Malagueta and La Caleta are the busiest beaches.
Marbella
Marbella is known as a glamorous resort town and is a favourite location with the rich and famous. But there’s plenty for everyone in this truly paradise. The most exclusive and classy venues are located in Puerto Banus and on the Golden Mile, which is also home to many celebrities. Marbella’s gastronomic offer is great, with everything from vegetarian cafes, to beachfront chiringuitos, and Michelin-starred restaurants.
Fuengirola
25km from Malaga International Airport is the town of Fuengirola, the most popular destination for Finns on the Costa del Sol. It is easy to see why this town is the number one choice. Tapa bars, good cafes and restaurants, a great variety of boutiques and shops, as well as fabulous beaches makes it the perfect vacation destination. Fuengirola has seven kilometres of sandy beaches. For those who love golf, Fuengirola is ideal with Mijas Golf just a few kilometres from Fuengirola downtown and many more courses very close. Of course water sports are strongly featured.
Nerja
Nerja is on the seashore, 50 kilometres from Málaga. It has 16 kilometres of beaches with sparkling clear water. The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa the “Balcony of Europe”, a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff. It has a panoramic view over the beaches, the mountains and the Mediterranean.
Nerja’s major tourist attraction is its caves. They include archaeological treasures such as paintings that are over 20 000 years old and other pre-historic remains. Concerts are regularly held in one of the chambers, which forms a natural amphitheatre during the summer.
Ronda
The historic town of Ronda can be reached from the city of Malaga by car in 45 minutes. Ronda sits on a plateau, on both sides of the deep El Tajo gorge, cut by the Guadalevín river. Among the notable monuments are a bullring, the Palacio of the Marqués de Salvatierra and the New Bridge, the Old Bridge and the Arab Bridge, crossing the canyon.
Only for those seeking adventure
El Caminito del Rey (The King’s little pathway) is a walkway of 3 kilometers, attached to the rocky side of a canyon. It has sections with a width of only 1 meter, hanging up to 100 meters above the river. After ten years of being closed, it was reopened in March 2015.
