Intriguing Stockholm is located between the Läke Mälaren and the coast of the Baltic Sea, its central parts consists 14 islands. It has about 910,000 residents.
City is first mentioned in written source in 1252, being allegedly founded by Birger Jarl. The city rose to prominence for Baltic trade of as a member of the Hanseatic League.
What to do and see in Stockholm
Gamla stan
Oldest part of Stockholm, Gamla stan, is located on the Stadsholmen island. Its narrow streets, stores and cafés welcomes a visitor to stroll. Gamla stan’s center square Stortorget is famous for annual Christmas fare and on its one side lies the Stock Exchange Building, which houses the Nobel Museum and the Nobel Library commemorating Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel. Here is also the Stockholm Cathedral, Riddarholm church and the Baroque Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet).
Kaknästornet
This seconc tallest structure of Sweden is the major hub of domestic television and radio broadcasts. Its height with antenna is 170 meters. It houses the information centre with a gift shop, indoor and outdoor observation decks as well as a restaurant, and it offers majestic vantage over the skyline of Stockholm. Opening hours
”Under the bridges of Stockholm” tour
This extraordinary sightseeing tour presents Stockholm from the water. A visitor will see through the boat’s window e.g. the Gamla stan, and the islands Södermalm, Lilla and Stora Essingen. Route goes under fifteen bridges and pass through two locks connecting the Baltic Sea with Lake Mälaren. Tour departs from Strömkajen.
Kolmården Adventure Park
Kolmården Adventure Park is one of the largest tourist attractions of the Nordic countries with over half a million visitors annually. The area is 150 hectares, and the nature and environment are bewitching. The place is full of things to do and see. In the zoo, you can admire over 750 animals from all over the world. The dolphin show is world-famous and very popular. The incomparable Safari gondola makes you really to hover, and below you will see lions and giraffes. In the Tiger World, you will meet the biggest cat of preys in the world. The breath-taking bird of prey show suits only for the bravest visitors. The world´s strongest bear, Bamse, lives in his own village.

The City Hall and Stadshusparken
The City Hall is one of the most fascinating buildings in Stockholm. Guided tours are offered almost daily all the year round. From the 106 meter tall tower, you can admire brilliant views over the city. Stadshusparken, designed by Ragnar Östberg, is a beautiful park between the City Hall and Riddarfjärden. The park consists of several parts, and the westernmost area is named after banker Knut Wallenberg, who financed the construction of the City Hall. There are several statues in the area.
The Stockholm Cathedral
The medieval Cathedral of Stockholm was built in 1279. Some of the most valuable and unique artworks of the building are the sculpture St George and the Dragon (1489), the famous Vädersoltavlan (1535) and the sculpture Joseph and Mary by Lena Lervik (2002). The Cathedral has been a Lutheran church since 1527. Besides religious services, several concerts are held in the church. The wedding of T. R. H. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were held there in 2010.
The Royal Palace
The Royal Palace of Stockholm is one of the largest palaces of Europe with over 600 rooms. The castle which is open to the public has five museums. The palace representing Italian Baroque style was built in the 18th century to the place where the Tre Kronor castle, burned in 1697, was located. Interesting attractions are the reception rooms with interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hall of the State with the silver throne of the Queen Kristina, Halls of the Orders of the Chivalry, Gustav III´s Museum of Antiquities, the Tre Kronor Museum, the Treasury and the Armory. The Nobel Museum
In the Nobel Museum, you can make yourself familiar with the world´s most important prize, Alfred Nobel himself and the Nobel Laureates. Guided tours and document films are offered. In the services are also included a bistro and a souvenir shop.
Gröna Lund´s Amusement Park
Gröna Lund´s Amusement Park is an excellent attraction for the whole family with over 30 exciting rides and several restaurants. In the park, you can also take part in pentathlon and enjoy of several concerts. The smallest family members can speed up safely in the kiddie bumper cars. Some other rides are, for example, flying elephants, flying carpet, house of nightmares and the novelty of 2017, Ikaros, which turns 90 degrees and drops horizontally. Skansen
Skansen is an attraction which suits for the whole family. In the outdoor museum hens, peacocks and foxes clump freely. The zoo in turn is inhabited, for example, by bears, lynxes, wild boars and monkeys. Surely children are also interested in pony riding, theater and amusement park. Junibacken
In the fairytale world Junibacken, you can meet the characters of Astrid Lindgren, loved by children, and the Moomintroll of Tove Jansson. Some of the highlights of the area are the Villa Villekulla of Pippi Longstocking and the fairytale train which goes through the stories of Astrid Lindgren. - The area of Södermalm is full of different shops. From there, you can get, for example, vintage products, fashion, art and design. There are also several eclectic shops, cafés and restaurants.
- Bibliotekstan, located in Östermalm, is the largest shopping district of Stockholm, from which you can get comprehensively Scandinavian and international top brands. The market hall Östermalmshallen is also worth of visiting.
- The Grandpa stores, located in Kungsholmen, Södermannagatan, Södermalm and Gamla Brogatan sell clothes, shoes, jewelries, vintage products, design and decorations.
- Svenskt Tenn, located in Strandvägen, is a traditional interior shop, from which you can get, for example, excellent glass and ceramic products.
- Souvenirs are also worth of searching from the square Sergels Torg, from which you can get, for example, design, the candy shop Pärlan´s representing the style of the 1950s, Swedish Hasbeens which sells Swedish clogs, and the perfume store
- The department store Mood Stockholm, located in Regeringsgatan, is full of fashion and design shops.

How to get in Stockholm
Stockholm has the international Stockholm-Arlanda Airport located 40 km (25 mi) north of the city, in the Sigtuna municipality. List of its airlines is here, list of its destinations here. Flygbussarna and Swebus runs buses to and from the City Terminal, just next to the Central Station. The Arlanda Express Train departs from the lower level of each airport terminal every 15 minutes and arrives at Stockholm Central Station in 20 minutes. Also Bromma and Skavsta airports serves Stockholm.
Tallink operates ferries between Stockholm and Tallinn, Riga and Mariehamn. Silja Line and Viking Line operates ferries to/from Helsinki, Turku and Mariehamn.
The main train station, Stockholms Central, serves both commuter and long-distance routes. It is located in lower Norrmalm, connected to T-Centralen, the central hub for the subway system, and Cityterminalen, the long-distance bus station. See domestic train timetables and ticket prices here. Internationally, there are services from Copenhagen (Denmark) (5 h) and Oslo (Norway) (6 h) with several direct connections daily. A daily overnight train is available from the northern Norwegian city of Narvik (14 h).
Eurolines operates bus lines to Stockholm from various European cities. Swebus Express operates routes to Copenhagen, Oslo and Berlin.
Highways E4, E18 and E20 lead to Stockholm.
How to get around in Stockholm
Stockholm’s public transportation is organized quite well. Storstockholms Lokaltrafik operates traffic with metro (T-bana), commuter trains (Pendeltåg) and buses as well as few ferries. All is integrated in SL Access ticket system. Timetables and ticket prices are visible here.
